Supreme’s seasonal Nike footwear collaboration is bringing back a forgotten Air Max model.
Originally known as the Air Max 2000, the sneaker was a cornerstone of Nike’s Alpha Project. The initiative, which kicked off in 1999, was built around pushing the boundaries of athletic performance and footwear design. Launched on the 1st of January of 1999, the Alpha Project aimed to innovate, well, everything. No aglet, no upper material, no sock liner was left untouched or unsupervised. The result was some of the most innovative high-tech designs of the time. Though the project was short-lived, it produced several sneakers that are revered all these years later.
Now, Supreme is bringing one of those sneakers back.
The sneaker not only returns with bold styling from the beloved streetwear brand, but it also returns with a new name. The Air Max 2001 Air Ecstasy is poised to enter a competitive market that is already full of tech runners in fun colorways. Supreme and Nike are up to the task, though.
Supreme’s reintroduction of the model brings a quilted mesh upper that replaces the traditional accent design with that of a 3M Reflective TPU that features Supreme spelled out, almost hiding it in plain sight thanks to the way the lines blend. Elsewhere, the sneaker features the transparent Air Max the line is so famous for, as well as co-branded footbeds, reflective lace loops and tongue panels.
Over the years, Supreme has proven its value to Nike, as the brand has been tapped on several occasions to kick off sneakers for Nike. The Air Max 2001 Air Ecsrasy is the latest sneaker to receive that treatment. While Nike prepares to release several in-line colorways in the coming months, Supreme’s collaboration will surely kick off the comeback on the right foot.
