Fans of Nike Basketball’s glorious run in the 2010s are already familiar with the weatherman story. In 2011, at the launch of his fourth signature sneaker, the KD 4, Kevin Durant revealed that if basketball had not worked out, he would have pursued a career as a weatherman. That humorous nugget inspired the KD 4 Weatherman, the beloved sneaker from 2011. It also would go on to inspire another KD signature sneaker- the KD 6 Meteorology.
The KD 6 Meteorology arrived during that aforementioned heat wave that Nike Basketball found itself in during the 2010s. An era where Nike Basketball’s top-of-the-line performance sneakers transitioned into the world of casual wear. Kobe’s were paired with jorts. LeBron’s were styled with cargo pants, and everyone had a KD sneaker with matching Nike Elite socks.
The era produced countless hits for Nike, and as the sneakers from that beloved era continue to resurface as retros in the 2020s, it was only a matter of time until the Meteorology 6 made a comeback.
Much like other Kevin Durant weather-inspired sneakers, the KD 6 Meteorology drew a lot of attention for its Doppler-radar-inspired design details. Where the KD 4 utilized several colors, likely referencing rain totals on a Doppler radar, the KD 6 Meteorology primarily used an army green and atomic red to break up the black base. Of course, the vibrant color attracted fans like mosquitoes to rain.
The KD 6 Meteorology arrived in an era where Nike Basketball was shaping style just as much as it led the world in on-court performance. Though that era is long behind us, the influence of Nike’s hot streak is felt to this day through performance lines across brands.
