One of the most defining sneakers in Jordan Brand history is returning this month.
For many reasons, the Air Jordan 6 in itself is one of the most significant silhouettes in the Jumpman’s lineage. The Jordan 6 let Tinker Hatfield flex his design skills by creating a high-top performance sneaker inspired by sports cars, a theme that would carry over across countless other Jordan Models. The 6 introduced classic colorways that fans still covet today. Most importantly, the Air Jordan 6 was the sneaker on Jordan’s foot when he finally won an NBA title. Thus, sealing its place in basketball and sneaker history.
Five colorways debuted during that historic 1991 NBA Season. All five colorways have become icons in the sneaker space, to varying degrees. None have left the impact that the Black and White Infrared colorways have, though. Both have surpassed their intended purpose as on-court performance shoes. This, of course, is not atypical of an Air Jordan sneaker. That said, both have become icons of the hobby and staples of the fashion sneaker world.
With the return of the White Air Jordan 6 Infrared this month, we’re looking back at the different renditions of the iconic sneaker. From its 1991 debut to the 2026 retro, and every celebrity on-foot appearance in between, we are breaking down why this sneaker is one of the most iconic shoes ever.

THE OG MAKES HISTORY

Tinker Hatfield went all in, as he does, when creating Michael Jordan’s sixth signature sneaker. The sleek lines throughout the upper were inspired by a Porsche sports car. The spoiler-like tongue tag only emphasized the inspiration more. Where the whole concept was tied together, though, was with the bright neon color that dressed the upper and accents of the sneaker. Of course, a flashy car needs a flashy paint job, and the Infrared was exactly that. A shoe bold in design was matched with colors just as bold. An icon was born (two if you count both the White and Black colorways).
The Air Jordan 6 was a pop culture phenomenon, as were plenty of classic Air Jordans in the 1990s. Naturally, the bright upper stood out, making it even more visible on the feet of the likes of Fred Savage.
THE INSTANT CLASSIC FINALLY RETURNS

Nineteen years is a long time. And though Jordan Brand exploded in popularity in the years since the Air Jordan 6 first launched, the White Infrared Air Jordan 6 did not return until 2010. When it finally returned, it made a lot of noise.
Both of the Air Jordan 6 Infrared colorways returned that year as part of a limited-edition “Infrared Pack”. The pack featured a limited-edition box that housed both renditions of the sneaker and retailed for $310. Fans got not only the returning Black Infrared Colorway (which had returned in 2000), but also the first-ever retro of the Air Jordan 6 White Infrared. That wasn’t it, though.
Six months after the pack originally released in January, Jordan Brand also launched spiritual successors that featured the same details, but swapped the Infrared for a more traditional Varsity Red. This quick revisit let JB double-dip into demand, since the pack was limited and in adult sizes. The Varsity Red renditions launched in full family sizing, though. As a result, Jordan Brand sparked a lot of dialogue about which shade was actually better. The jury is still out sixteen years later.
This era was significant, though. In the 2010s, sneakers had become mainstream. They were part of consciousness. They also became an identifier of who had taste. Kanye West famously wore both renditions of the sneakers. Meanwhile, paparazzi shots captured Justin Timberlake sporting the Varsity Red rendition. This era of sneakers was truly a special moment for fans. It not only brought back one of the most important sneakers ever, but it did it in more ways than one.
THE INFRARED RETURNS IN OG FORM

By the time the 2014 retro launched, Jordan Brand had gone all in on releasing “true-to-form” retros. The 2014 White Infrared was just that.
The 2014 retro brought back the shoe fans fell in love with in 1991. It was in these years that Jordan retros began featuring the “Nike Air” branding that fans had been begging to return to their sneakers- in order to retain the feeling of the originals. The 2014 retro of the White Infrareds delivered on that, becoming the first rendition of the sneaker to feature it since the 1991 release.
Not only that, the sneaker finally launched in full-family sizing. Though the 2010 retro launch brought us back the iconic sneaker for the first time, it was the 2014 retro that did so for the whole family. All the while, it delivered on the brand’s goal of giving us the original back.
This era of Jordan Brand was defined by restoring the feeling of the original, restoring the feeling of falling in love with Air Jordan sneakers. It delivered on that with the 2014 Air Jordan 6 White Infrared.
THE CLASSIC RETURNS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER A DECADE

Twelve years since last hitting shelves, the Air Jordan 6 White Infrared is back.
In its absence, Jordan Brand has delivered some of the best retros in the brand’s history. Whether it was the Reimagined line or dropping OG’s in new, updated molds, the brand has put a lot of emphasis in the last decade on satisfying loyal sneaker fans. They look to be repeating that theme with this year’s retro.
Much like recent updates to the Air Jordan 4, the 2026 White Infrared 6 retro has updated the shape of the iconic sneaker to be true to the 1991 original. Purists will be excited to know that this is not the only true-to-OG update. The sneaker also features the “Nike Air” heel branding as well as the lace-locks.
The 2026 retro takes the shoe’s storied history and blends the reds into a Light Crimson that is bright like the OG, all while maintaining a strong hit of red close to that beloved 2010 retro. In a sense, this year’s rendition is the best of all the launches. It carries the legacy of the 1991 original. At the same time, it understands the special moment that was the 2010 retro and the 2014 return to form. A release of a sneaker as special as this one has to nail it. And nail it, it has.
The Air Jordan 6 White Infrared returns November 7th via Nike and participating Jordan Brand retailers.
